After 83 years, Tsukiji Shijo – the world’s biggest and most famous fish and seafood market – was relocated to Toyosu in another part of Tokyo, Japan.

Tsukiji was built in the aftermath of the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. The market opened 12 years later, in February 1935, replacing a 300-year-old market that was located near the city center.

This photo series documents Tsukiji’s frenetic pace, busy alleys and hard working men and women on one of the market’s last days.

Photographed in July 2018. Tsukiji closed October 6, 2018
